1BrightonFM granted community license

Press release – for immediate publication

1 Brighton FM are delighted to confirm that we have been granted a Community Radio License for the Sussex and Kent regions by Ofcom. These are issued to stations who provide their services on a not-for-profit basis and who focus on the providing social benefits.

1 Brighton FM has been broadcasting online since April 2015 and works closely with a number of local organisations including Audio Active, University Radio Falmer, Kiss My Disco and The Clock Tower Sanctuary. The station offers internships to students at Brighton & Hove City College and gives students airtime to practice their skills.

Michael Jukes, Managing Director of 1 Brighton FM said: “We are very pleased with the news. We cherish the diversity and creativity of our community and the station reflects that. We have worked hard to get here and we look forward to reaching a new audience through our new FM bandwidth!”

Christopher Galloway, Director, said: “We currently host shows from over 100 local DJs, musicians and community groups. We are a commercial-free not-for-profit station. There are no playlists: DJs are free to play the music they want to play. This means that we believe we offer the people of Brighton the widest and most varied music available on local radio today.” Christopher was recently awarded with City College’s Achievers Award for his 1 Brighton work with City College.

1 Brighton FM’s bandwidth has not yet been confirmed but will be announced shortly, coupled with the date of the first FM broadcast.

To raise funds for a transmitter the station are hosting a series of fundraisers. The first two are taking place on the Saturday and Sunday of the August Bank Holiday weekend at the Big Beach Café in Hove. Acid house and Balearic music legend Nancy Noise will be headlining the Saturday and Sunday sees local reggae stars Prince Fatty and Pressure Drop top the bill.
