1BTN veteran, Steve KIW, with a cracking 3-hour show dedicated to – we think it’s fair to say – his musical decade of choice. An inverse take on the recent Radio 2 ‘Best Album’s Of The 80’s’ feature, which left him fairly cheesed off, so to speak.

Here, he can tell you himself –

‘You might have missed it, what with all else that is going on in the world right now, but on ‘National Album Day’ last weekend those well meaning folk who listen to Radio 2 voted “in their thousands” for the best album of the 1980s. As we have learned to our collective detriment, if you let the people of the UK vote on anything then it’s likely to end in tears. I’ll just say that their top two was U2’s ‘The Joshua Tree’ and Dire Straits’ ‘Brothers In Arms’ and leave it at that.

Actually, I won’t.

Their top 40 was exceptional only in its banality. Some corkers made it through the collective amnesia but a lot of horrors have, according to these musical connoisseurs, seemingly improved through age: I love Kylie as much as anyone but I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life than her debut album is not one of the best 40 albums of any era, it probably isn’t one of the best 40 Kylie records FFS, and as for ‘Raintown’ by Deacon Blue… Where was ‘The Cactus Album’ by 3rd Bass? Who could forget ‘London 0 Hull 4’ by The Housemartins? Where in the name of all that is holy was ‘3 Feet High and Rising’?

So, in lieu of a normal show, tonight’s sees a (now rare) 80s special on the BAOL show… see what makes the cut on 1BTN from 5pm’

That’s exactly what he did. Click the play button and indulge in a more tasteful nod to the sound of our youth.
